Steve Speed - Photojournalism

For the next workshop, I went to hear our own tutor Steve Speed talk about his career in photojournalism and his travels around the world. I wanted to listen to this talk to find out another area of photography that I wasn't necessarily aiming towards, but wanted to know more about.



  • Defines himself as photography and digital media artist.
  • Has previously done agency work.
  • A job taking images of the less interesting stories and basic photography.
  • He took basic portraits of people to do with the story.
  • When being a photojournalist the could focused more on peoples lives and society problems, in communities and people in poverty etc. 
  • He moved onto the trip to Kenya, the project was based on a new water pipe, that lead into the rose farms in the area. 
  • He went on to talk about photographing campaigns. 
  • He focuses on political issues, shooting press shots that tell a story.
  • He visits local demonstrations, documenting what happens and the reason for them.
  • The fracking in Salford, Barton Moss, has become and big interest.
  • Themes such as community, portraits, campaigners and changes in society.
  • He talked about how all work needs to be ready for publish.
  • They need to go along with the articles and news.
